Read on to find out why I believe upgrading to Doug Thorley headers is the best way to fix them. The 2UZ is a legendary engine. Toyota used it across their entire lineup of trucks. You see, they all do it eventually. Every one of them. This issue exists thanks to emission regulations. The reason Toyota used this flawed design is to lower the emission readings during cold starts.
The 4. This required mating the catalytic converter and exhaust manifold into a one piece design. Other automakers took a similar approach to this, and surprise surprise, they suffer from the same problem! The combination of the thin metal and the excessive weight of the catalytic converter hanging off the end is what causes them to crack. Typically, the cracks will appear where the edge of the tube is welded to the flange.
Want to read more about my Toyota 4runner? All the details are shared in this feature article:. The most common sign of a cracked exhaust manifold is a loud ticking sound coming from the engine bay.
This ticking sound will speed up and slow down with the revs of the engine. The reason the sound goes away when the engine is warm is because metal tends to expand with heat. When the engine is cold, the crack is large enough to leak. When it warms up, the crack gradually closes with the heat expansion.
If your ticking sound remains even when the engine is warmed up mine didthat means you have a larger crack that still leaks when the metal has expanded. There is a bit of good news. It will never leave you stranded on the side of the road. As with any form of exhaust leak, carbon monoxide poisoning is a concern.
The ticking noise is downright embarrassing. You have 4 options if you decide to fix your cracked exhaust manifolds. All of them require the labor of removing the manifold s.
This can be expensive if you pay someone to do it, and destroy both your knuckles and patience if you choose to do it yourself. I would recommend having someone diagnose your problem or give you a 2nd opinion before pulling the trigger on any of these. This page is dedicated for our Toyota Hilux customers. This is a very simple install and can take under 3 hours if you have two guys. The CAI combined with an aftermarket exhaust will open up the airflow through your engine, thus increasing the overall performance. While you are at it, just install the entire list of performance mods for the 4Runner. This makes for an easy process for getting in and out from underneath your 4Runner. This is the piece that connects the actual muffler to the Y-pipe.
At this point, you do not want to actually remove the exhaust or even the bolts. Leave the bolts connected. Right now we are just loosening the connection from the exhaust to the Y-Pipe. We will need to remove two more bolts that are connected to the exit tubing. At this point, you want to loosen these bolts as well. It is important to keep the bolts on that are connected to the Y-Pipe as the whole system moves when you are trying to unbolt the exhaust from the exit pipe.
You remove the bolts from the Y-Pipe like we didyou are going to have a hard time getting leverage on unbolting the exhaust from the exit pipe. We had to put the bolts back on to get enough leverage to remove the second set of bolts pictured below.
After you have loosened the 4 bolts from the Y-Pipe and the exit pipe, you can now remove all 4 bolts and set the aside.

Next, you want to remove all 5 of the rubber connectors rubber isolators that hold your exhaust on and prevent your whole truck from shaking when your engine is running. Pictured below are all 5 rubber connection points.
To loosen the rubber connectors, use WD40 and a very small flathead screwdriver. Use the flathead screwdriver to open up the rubber connectors in between the rubber and metal. Spray the WD40 in between these small spaces and slide the rubber connectors back and forth until everything is sliding around nice and free. After you have greased up the rubber isolators with WD40, you can now remove all rubber connectors and remove the OEM 4Runner exhaust.According to who you talk toit will be ok.
I am doing the injectors, and having the pump recalibrated by a diesel mech mate, sohopefully, I am doing the right thing. Its either that or buy a hzj landcruiser. This is cheaper. Date: AM Nov 28, I am going to attempt to get more power out of my old hilux 4wd as its thirstyand slow at the moment. My brother in law has a sim ilar hilux with an aftermarket turbo and the diference is amazing. Are there any tricks or traps I should know about? From all Reports, too much boost shortens the life of your motor, So I am going to fit a boost guage anda pyro meter exhaust tempand keep the boost below 10lbs.
Has anybody fitted a kit themselves? I would apreciate your views. Thanks, Bill. Bill I would consider the cost of altering the vehicle. That cost would buy a lot of fuel and the alteration will shorten the life of the current engine. Maybe its time for the hilux to be replaced with something more suited to your current and future needs. The devil made me do it - to hell with the Devil. Thanks for the help. Its not going to cost that much as I have the turbo and all the bits, except the exhaust downpipe, and I will do the work myself.
I was going to buy my self a hxj series landcruiser ute, but I am a bit attached to the old hilux as we have done a lot of miles together. I will try the turbo and see. Date: PM Nov 28, If your motor has done alot of work then you are pushinh your luck as far as durabilitly goes ,as it puts a lot more stress on the motor. I done my cruiser years ago ,as it was using a lot of oil i rebuilt it first. Be your self; there's no body better qualified! From my point of view, the answer is easy: Keep your old toyo and get a cheap landcruiser. At Walker, it's more than peace of mind in knowing we lead the industry with unparalleled level of compliance.

For anyone looking to safely and reliably increase engine power on their Hilux or Fortuner, these are no small numbers.
What makes this performance upgrade even better, is the fact that it is done on a dynamometer, which considers a multitude of performance conditions.
These include throttle, boost, fuel mixture, engine temperature, engine speed, engine load and even injector performance. At Steves Auto Clinic we will always insist that any performance upgrade or the fitment of a Plug and Play system is done by our Performance Engineers and on a dynamometer. Engines are expensive and we prefer that each unit is fitted, tested and optimised by a specialist and not merely plugged in by anyone, without considering the over points of tuning available on the Unichip.
The options — referred to as engine maps — offer an anti-theft map, which immobilizes the engine, a standard map, which makes the bakkie or Fortuner drive exactly according to manufacturer specifications and an off-road and towing map, which gives the engine more power and torque at specific engine speeds, for when you are towing something or driving off-road.
But if you chose the ultimate map, you will suddenly unleash a different animal under the bonnet of your Hilux or Fortuner. In its top setting, Steves Auto Clinic has unleashed the maximum amount of power that could safely and reliably be tapped from this sturdy engine. This is best discussed with the Performance Specialist at your nearest Steves Auto Clinic, but it includes the fitment of a performance exhaust system, which significantly reduces back pressure and hugely improves gas flow from the cylinders through the exhaust.
Do your homework well : Unichip vs. This Power Cooler is front mounted and it is designed and tested to allow for a far greater volume of air flow to the engine, thanks to its superior cooling capabilities.
With the fitment of the front mounted cooler, the bonnet scoop on the Hilux and Fortuner is better utilised to cool the entire engine and not only the intake air. We develop and test our conversions to breaking point and insist that the conversion is done by a specialist on a dynamometer. Visit your nearest SAC Performance and Service Centre to learn more and to experience the mind blowing difference in performance and driveability from your D4D engine that is only available from Steves Auto Clinic.
The primary function of an upgraded intercooler is to improve on the cooling efficiency over the standard cooler. This means that the entry air temperature needs to be dropped as far as possible more than the standard cooler at the exit of the cooler without compromising or interfering with the flow and or charge pressure- the boost.
The new cooler mounts in the same location as the standard one and in most cases, utilizes the original pipes and clamps. With the exception of the D4D Hilux that goes from top mount to front mount The intercooler upgrade is an integral part of the performance enhancement process that optimizes the volumetric efficiency of a TDi Bakkie.
In short, the way that the cooler works is to cool down the air as much as possible — that is being produced by the turbo charger that heats up when compressed. Fast-hard riding as well as towing causes thermal engine temperature creep which eventually spirals out of control and deteriorates your vehicles engine condition and shortens its life.

Toyota Hilux (2005-2015) D4D KUN 3L Turbo Diesel - 3" Turbo Back Exhaust
Contact us today for your free quotation. Gone are the days that you take your half a million-rand Bakkie to a corner exhaust shop for a cheap free flow exhaust.
It is no longer just a poorly welded and routed exhaust that rattles and knocks over every bump, it is a properly engineered, big bore, mandrill bent stainless steel-low restriction exhaust system. In a four-stroke engine, the exhaust cycle is the last step in the process when the burned gasses are expelled from the engine. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the burnt gasses out of the cylinder.
If there is any resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gasses out, power is wasted. This is known as back pressure.
Therefore, the goal is to get the burnt gasses out of the engine and exhaust system as efficiently as possible. These gasses travel through the exhaust port into the exhaust manifold, then travel through the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter and muffler, and finally vent to the environment. Any obstacles or severe "bends" in the system can affect back pressure, slowing the flow of exhaust gasses. Therefore, an exhaust system that reduces back pressure improves efficiency and can create additional power output.
This increases performance in acceleration. TRD exhaust systems reduce back pressure by getting burnt gasses out of the engine and exhaust system efficiently, therefore creating additional power output. Dual wall construction preserves the bright polish stainless finish from discoloring heat. Our Minds Are Always Racing.
